This is an update to our Data Protection Laws of the World: Tanzania dated 26 January 2023, which provided an overview of the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022, available here. The Personal Data Protection Act of 2022 was assented by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania in November 2022 and was to come into force on the date which the Minster responsible for communications would specify in the Government Gazette.

On 28 April 2023, the Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Hon. Nape Nnauye, through the Government Gazette No. 326 of 2023, published a notice of the date of coming into operation of the Personal Data Protection Act of 2022. The Notice indicated that the date which the Act would officially come into operation was 1 May 2023.

The Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 will be the national data protection law and the principal Act for protection of the right to privacy and personal security enshrined in the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, 1977.
