IMMMA hosts the first DLA Piper Africa academy of 2018

This March, IMMMA had the pleasure of hosting the first DLA Piper Africa Training Academy of 2018.The training was held in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania from 21st March to 24th March. The programme activities and attendees were accommodated at the Ramada Hotel in Mbezi Beach, Dar es Salaam.

With over 65 attendees from various DLA Piper member firms, countries represented included Botswana, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, London, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania,Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The academy consisted of trainings provided by Clementine Johnson, Michael Olatokun, Simon Dawkins, David Church, Katie O’Brien, Ben Sanderson and Chris Baird from the UK, Delphine Chevallier from France, Nerushka Bowan, Monique du Preez, Liza Odendaal, Peter Bradshaw, Jackie Pennington, Pride Jani, Mmanake Msiza, Brian Malcomess and Michael Whitaker from South Africa, Sadock Magai and Gaspar Nyika from Tanzania, Ramsey Beck, William Maema, Ashley Zefira and Haanee Khan from Kenya and Yared Getachew from Ethiopia.

Among the key topics discussed were Pro Bono, Online tools, Global Scholarships Programme, Risk management and the risk framework for DLA Piper Africa, Growing your client base, client service and client expectations, Power Project Financing, Corporate / M&A and Understanding the economy.

Furthermore, training was done on ‘Skills in legal presentations’ where the focus was on business presentation skills and attendees were offered tips to create exciting & vibrant legal presentations.There was also segment that touched on Financial Technology (Fintech) in which Bitcoin, blockchains and the future of crypto-currency were broken down and explained.

Other topics of training were ADR / Arbitration, Introduction to Finance and Introduction to Project Finance and Emerging technology where it was elaborated on how technology was the future of law.

Apart from the main training programme, there was a concurrent students’ fellowship taking place throughout. The fellowship had attendees from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Uganda, UK, Senegal, Soloman Island, and Zambia.

Overall, the programme in it’s entirety was a tremendous success and demonstrated great initiative by DLA Piper Africa and IMMMA Advocates.The IMMMA team would like to extend a wholehearted word of thanks to all the speakers, attendees and participants as a whole.We had a truly memorable week and look forward to hosting yet another event in our city.
